The Broken Ring or Landolt "C" vision chart is a popular vision chart because of it's accuracy and versatility. The Landolt "C" acuity chart uses only one optotype for testing. This optotype, the letter "C," is positioned in several positions including up, down, left, right and 45 degree positions. The patient merely has to gesture the direction they view the missing piece. Those patients who are not familiar with the Roman alphabet will view the "C" as a symbol rather than a letter. There is no verbal response required, which makes this chart a universal vision test.
