HOTV chart was developed for pediatric use. The idea behind the chart was to use recognizable optotypes that could be matched and identified easily while testing. Preliterate children can be taught the 4 letters before testing, and can use the response key during testing to match the letter they see. The HOTV response key not only helps the child feel confident while testing, but helps in accurate recordings of the visual acuity screening.
