Low Vision | SK Read | Envision Vision | Envision University – Precision Vision

IN THE NEWS

Precision Vision is committed to helping those with Low Vision. Did you know that over 135 million people worldwide are currently affected by Low Vision? Precision Vision is committed to serving these individuals by providing Eye Care Professionals with top quality products that exceed expectations. We work with some of the best researchers like Donald C. Fletcher, MD and August Colenbrander, MD, Ian Bailey, OD and many others to develop and deliver our signature gold standard vision testing products.

Focusing on Low Vision

According to the World Health Organization, more than 135 million people worldwide are currently affected by Low Vision. Prevent Blindness America says 3 million U.S. residents suffer from Low Vision. People with low vision have a substantially reduced quality of life, and once they’ve been told by their eye care provider that “nothing more can be done” with “regular” corrective eyeglasses, they tend to be frustrated and may not know about the resources available to help them lead more productive lives.

Vision rehabilitation specialists use a variety of tools – including magnifiers and telescopes. Here at Precision Vision, we are completely committed to helping those with Low Vision. Through years of research and hard work, we have built a top quality product line that sets the gold standard for Low Vision care.

We have also had the good fortune to have some of the best researchers working with us to develop our products. Donald C. Fletcher, MD is a clinician and researcher in the field of retinal diseases and low vision rehabilitation, and has worked with us to develop the SK Read cards. The SK Read Test, named for the Smith-Kettlewell Eye Research Institute, was specifically developed to test reading in the absence of contextual clues, according to Dr. Fletcher, of the Frank Stein and Paul S. May Center for Low Vision Rehabilitation, the California Pacific Medical Center and the Smith-Kettlewell Eye Research Institute. He’s also the medical director of the Envision Vision Rehabilitation Center.

Precision Vision, along with Dr. Fletcher, believes that because low vision care is multidisciplinary, education plays a major role. Michael Epp, director of professional education at Envision University, said that “working with a group like Precision Vision has been great. Their commitment to the field and ability to get the clinical tools into the hands of professionals who need to use them is so important. Precision Vision ‘gets’ it.”

The Envision Conference serves as the platform to bring thought leaders in low vision together to discuss the necessary interventions needed. “We work through a peer-review process and use people like August Colenbrander, MD, and Dr. Fletcher as our peer reviewers,” Mr. Epp said. “Precision Vision really understands the needs of the Low Vision community. When they introduce a product, it’s backed up by research. They figure out how a clinician can put it into play and serve more patients.”

Precision Vision is proud to work with both Drs. Colenbrander and Fletcher and others to bring their Low Vision products to your clinics. Read more on SK Read and Dr. Fletcher in our September 2010 newsletter.

The SK Read Test Two Card Set was developed to assess the reading performance of English speaking adults who may be encountering central or paracentral scotomas (visual field defects). It’s designed to allow words to be easily confused and facilitate the verbalization of mistakes encountered while reading.

The pattern of verbalized mistakes can help to differentiate left and right sided scotoma interference. Blocks of text range in size from 8 M units down to 0.4 M units.

Each block of text contains 6 single letters, 1 two letter word, 2 three letter words, 3 four letter words, 3 five letter words, and 1 six letter word.
