The Risks of Buying Low Quality Equipment

In this article, we want to highlight our concerns about the use of low-quality and unproven equipment in clinical trials and research; because if you’re involved in trials or studies, the differences matter more than they might seem.

Why We’re Concerned

We continue to see procurement vendors sourcing alternative Illuminator Cabinets, bulbs, and other products marketed as equal to ours.

On the surface, these products can look similar. They may even claim to meet the same specs. But here’s the reality:

  • Most vendors do not manufacture, calibrate, or verify calibration.
  • Substitutions may occur without disclosure to trial sponsors or CROs.
  • Vendors may not fully understand the differences between genuine and substitute equipment.

We value procurement partners, but decision-makers deserve clear facts that protect study outcomes.

Consistency and Calibration are Critical

Working with human subjects introduces many uncontrollable variables. Managing test repeatability (BCVA, LCVA, etc.) across patients and sites is essential and fortunately, it’s also the easiest variable to control with high quality equipment.

At Precision Vision:

  • Every 2425 LED flat panel cabinet is precisely calibrated to meet posted luminance values.
  • Traditional fluorescent 2425 cabinets are built in small, calibrated production lots.
  • Our 2425 ETDRS® Illuminator Cabinet™ has evolved through four generations, always holding the same high standards to protect data integrity.

Nobody does what we do.

Our Commitment, Your Confidence

Are the steps we take more than necessary?
No, they are our responsibility. They always have been, and they always will be.

That’s why for over 40 years, Precision Vision has been the trusted choice for clinical trials and vision research worldwide.
