Lighthouse ETDRS® Clinical Tracking Data
Providing Key Normative Parameters and Comparison Matrices in the Retinopathy of Prematurity Study

Subjects were tested monocularly using Lighthouse Early Treatment and Diabetic Retinopathy Study distance and near ETDRS® visual acuity charts alongside Pelli-Robson contrast sensitivity charts, with refractive error corrected according to the rigid Cryotherapy for Retinopathy of Prematurity study criteria.
In this scientific protocol evaluation, results for distance visual acuity, near visual acuity, and contrast sensitivity indicated systematically higher baseline measurement values for the eye tested first than for the eye tested second.

Precision Vision is consistently chosen to work with the leading authorities and researchers engaged in advancing eye care in the vision testing industry. When contacted by the NEI and New York Lighthouse (a division of Lighthouse International) to develop the first commercially viable trans-illumination cabinets and charts, we gladly accepted the challenge.
Today, our ETDRS® Illuminator Cabinet™ and calibrated charts are deployed worldwide across top research facilities, pharmaceutical clinical trials, and private practitioner clinics. We pride ourselves on engineering the de-facto standard to which all other optical metrics are compared.

Each issue we take a look at some of the most frequently asked questions that we receive and feature a clinical Q&A below:
Q: What is the difference between Original ETDRS® Charts and the Lighthouse ETDRS® Charts?
A: There are no clinical or research-based differences in optotype structure, geometric spacing ratios, or sizing metrics between the Original ETDRS® Charts and the specialty edition of Lighthouse ETDRS® Charts. There are a few subtle cosmetic modifications on the Lighthouse variations, including reference lines printed along the lower acuity rows and an integrated conversion table in the footer for quick Snellen fraction cross-referencing.
