Effects of Home Reading Training in AMD

A Randomized and Controlled Study on Reading Performance and Quality of Life

Patient Reading Evaluation with Visual Aids

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) causes reading impairment, reduced quality of life (QoL), and secondary depression. Clinical studies have shown that support with magnifying aids improves reading speed (RS), emotional and cognitive status, and overall QoL.

This randomized and controlled study investigates whether structured, additional reading training (RT)—administered after adapting patients to appropriate visual magnifying aids—can further optimize low-vision rehabilitation outcomes.

The IReST (International Reading Speed Texts) system completely closes an old gap in the diagnostics of standardized reading performance. Unlike traditional text charts that rely on brief, isolated sentences, the IReST employs linguistically standardized text paragraphs. These multi-line blocks are carefully designed to closely resemble everyday life reading configurations—such as reading continuous text passages in books, magazines, or newspapers.

PRODUCT PROFILE

Available in 19 languages and dialects, the IReST system optimizes clinical reading time tracking by utilizing paragraphs that match a fixed sixth-grade reading level (10–12 years). This vocabulary profile is highly comprehensible for teenagers and adults alike across global demographics.

Due to significantly lower structural variance, measuring the complete reading execution time of a whole uniform paragraph is mathematically more reliable than evaluating single sentences or random word rows. This extended text format allows eye care professionals to capture nuanced diagnostics regarding reading fluency, visual accommodation fatigue, and cognitive mistakes over time.
