EyeOnVision February, 2021 - Low Vision Awareness Month
February is Low Vision Awareness Month
Spreading Awareness for Specialized Diagnosis, Rehabilitation, and Clinical Pioneers
Low vision refers to a significant visual impairment that cannot be corrected through standard surgical methods, pharmaceutical interventions, prescription eyeglasses, or contact lenses. It is often characterized clinically by partial sight profiles such as central blur blocks, blind spots, or peripheral tunnel vision constraints. While low vision can impact individuals across all age groups, it is primarily associated with older adults.
The most prevalent underlying causes include Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD/ARMD), Diabetic Retinopathy, Glaucoma, Cataracts, and Retinitis Pigmentosa. However, a wider demographic of patients may experience functional loss due to strokes, Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), or inherited traits such as Stargardt disease, albinism, and Retindex of Prematurity (ROP).
There is a bright side! Proper diagnostic tracking and vision rehabilitation empower individuals to lead independent, active lives. Low Vision Awareness Month celebrates these strategies and asks you to join global pioneers as we all work to Lead the Fight Against Blindness.

Clinical Video Profile: The Case for SK Read
The Case for SK Read
In honor of Low Vision Awareness, we examine a specialized diagnostic platform featuring insights from noted ophthalmologist Dr. Donald Fletcher, alongside expert commentary by Dr. Gianfrancesco Villani, regarding the development and deployment of the SK Read Vision Test.
Dr. Fletcher engineered this configuration following extensive clinical use of the iconic MNRead Tests developed by Dr. Gordon Legge and Dr. J. Stephen Mansfield. The resulting SK Read Test provides specialized metrics for low-vision rehabilitation practitioners (including low-vision ophthalmologists, optometrists, and occupational therapists) to evaluate reading patterns. Both the MNRead and SK Read test systems are manufactured and distributed exclusively by Precision Vision.
