Calibrated Light Meter - An Exam Lane Essential for BCVA Testing

Best‑Corrected Visual Acuity (BCVA) using ETDRS® charts remains the FDA‑endorsed gold‑standard endpoint in ophthalmic clinical trials, as reaffirmed during the NEI‑FDA Ophthalmic Clinical Trial Design consensus and subsequent regulatory guidance. The National Eye Institute (NEI) and the FDA emphasize standardized testing protocols, including chart design, testing distance, and critically ambient illumination.

Why light standardization matters: Even modest deviations from the specified luminance range (160 cd/m², aligned with ETDRS protocol requirements) can introduce variability in BCVA scores and undermine comparability across clinical sites. To meet the strict requirements set forth by entities such as NIH/NEI and the FDA, and to comply with quality standards sponsors can count on the Precision Vision Lux Light Meter just just for BCVA assessments but also for contrast sensitivity tests like the Pelli-Robson, Mars, and APEX.

Dual-Range Light Meter

Dual-Range Meter reads both lux and foot-candles on a large 1/2-inch-high display. An analog output of 0.1 millivolt per digit allows readings to be captured by a recorder. Precision selenium photovoltaic cells and microprocessor provide for a fast-response sampling rate of 0.4 seconds and an automatic zero adjustment. Display update rate may be set to 1 or 2 seconds.

Traceable^® Certificate

An individually-numbered Traceable® Certificate provided with each unit, assures accuracy from our calibration laboratory accredited by A2LA. It indicates traceability of measurements to the SI units through NIST or other recognized national measurement institutes that are signatories to the CIPM Mutual Recognition Agreement.

Monitor and store results

DATA HOLD button freezes the display to capture readings. Precise photodiode and color-correction filter provide cosine- and color-corrected measurements. Unit is supplied with 2 inch diameter photocell, 40-inch cable, Traceable^® Certificate, 9-volt alkaline battery, and recorder output.

Dual-Range Meter measures lux in three ranges:

• 0 to 1999 (1 lux resolution)
• 2000 to 19,990 (10 lux resolution)
• 20,000 to 50,000 (100 lux resolution)

Readings in Foot-Candles (Fc):

• 0 to 199.9 (0.1 Fc resolution)
• 200 to 1999 (1 Fc resolution)
• 2000 to 5000 (10 Fc resolution)
