The design of the Tumbling E is similar to that of grating stripes. This is helpful in the detection of Against the Rule Astigmatism. Also, the Tumbling E chart has proven to be nearly equal to the gold standard Landolt C chart when it comes to visual acuity thresholds. Tumbling E charts are useful for testing patients of multiple ages and languages.
