Tumbling E charts, also known as Illiterate E charts, feature the use of only one optotype. This makes testing illiterate and mute patients easier. The patient only has to gesture the direction they see the E facing. Also the design of the E has similar features to that of grating stripes. Although the Landolt C chart is considered the gold standard of alternative vision testing, many studies have shown that the Tumbling E chart is nearly equal to it and is also great for the detection of Astigmatism.
