Interactive Vision Assessment: The Next Frontier
Precision Vision® Eliminates Observer Bias Using Automated Staircase Psychophysical Protocols
Static letter charts have remained the foundational anchor for visual acuity evaluation since the 1860s—transitioning from traditional matte printed media to projector screens, and recently to high-resolution computer monitors. Digital displays introduce definite lane benefits, particularly because active pixel arrays are far less influenced by volatile ambient room lux than standard wall charts.
Yet, standard monitor configurations fail to eliminate potential psychological bias on the part of the clinician. Operators must still prompt the patient for verbal confirmation. If a patient initially declares a tight line illegible, some practitioners accept the response and move on, while others encourage them to try a little harder. This variable conversational friction compromises data consistency.
Isolating True Thresholds: The Interactive Vision Assessment (IVA™) system, developed by August Colenbrander, MD, bypasses observer bias entirely. By surrendering a 4-button remote responder directly to the patient, the software shifts the task from verbal evaluation to a forced-choice psychophysical staircase loop.
“Pediatric populations are instantly drawn to the interactive display because they perceive the staircase tracking sequence as an immersive computer game. Older adults view the step-down visual cues as an engaging challenge. You will simply never secure that level of active alignment from a traditional static letter chart line.”

The IVA™ Automated Staircase Testing Paradigm
The operational mechanics of the IVA™ rely on an automated staircase calculation sequence—the longtime gold standard for precise laboratory psychophysical testing. When presented with a four-alternative forced-choice optotype target, such as randomized Tumbling E orientations, Landolt C gaps, Patti Pics® symbols, or HOTV matrices, the patient enters their choice directly via the remote handset.
Beyond eliminating tone-of-voice encouragement bias, the IVA™ generates an explicit graphical display of the full step-response curve. This permits clinicians to evaluate answer consistency instantly and spot clear signs of malingering or testing fatigue.
Far from a single-purpose program, the platform functions as an exhaustive clinical suite: providing electronic ETDRS logMAR charts, calibrated fixation markers, phoria tests indexed in pure prism diopters, multi-alternative Amsler grids, and classic Worth 4-dot fields. Manufactured to our signature, uncompromised tolerances, the IVA™ transforms your computer display into an objective laboratory diagnostics center.
