European-wide ETDRS eye charts - Precision Vision
A Trans-Continental Standard for Visual Acuity
Precision Vision® Launches "European-Wide" ETDRS Formats Overcoming Alphabetic Borders
The visual acuity charts developed for the landmark Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study (ETDRS) established a mathematically rigorous geometric layout and uniform testing protocol that has been adopted globally as the gold standard for visual data logging. However, a profound logistical barrier has historically blocked its seamless cross-border implementation across multinational clinical trial networks.
Because traditional ETDRS charts rely exclusively on standard Sloan optotypes derived from the Latin (Roman) alphabet, they cannot be reliably interpreted by millions of European citizens who communicate via different script lineages. This literacy friction introduces subjective bias and fragments patient tracking maps.
The Eurofont Solution: To secure uncompromised, cross-border visual acuity screening, researchers at the University of Crete have successfully engineered modified ETDRS charts. By selecting only glyphs shared universally across the Latin, Greek, and Cyrillic alphabets, they have established a unified diagnostic platform across an expansive demographic territory.

Validating the 5x5 Grid Typography and Repeatability Metrics
To maintain strict experimental continuity with original logMAR parameters, the developers isolated the precise geometric properties of the letters themselves. Out of the original Sloan roster, only the capital characters **C, O, and H** were maintained. The remaining mismatched letters (C, D, N, R, S, V, Z) were completely substituted with **E, P, X, B, T, M, and A**.
This modified design has completed intensive multi-center validation protocols in clinical settings across Greece, Bulgaria, and Belgium. In direct comparison trials evaluating identical subject blocks, the new charts produced visual acuity scores entirely equivalent to standard ETDRS setups, confirming a stellar test-retest repeatability margin of approximately 0.10 logMAR.
Extended Geographic Implementation Zone
Facilitating reliable data exchange among all EU, Slavic, and Mediterranean populations
European-Wide Series ETDRS Distance Charts
Precision Vision manufactures full-sized distance charts using the verified University of Crete alphabetic matrix. These testing lines remain absolutely faithful to standard geometric progressions, ensuring error-free integration into any backlit retro-illuminated cabinet lane. Ideal for international clinical trial tracking and uniform patient logging.
Mixed Contrast "European-Wide" Near Card
Engineered to systematically screen both near vision at a 33cm baseline and intermediate vision at 66cm coordinates. This double-sided $7^{\prime\prime} \times 9^{\prime\prime}$ rigid panel layout presents a unique mixed contrast configuration:
One face delivers pristine, high-contrast text lines, while the reverse side presents a calibrated **20% Weber / 10% Michelson low-contrast matrix**. A built-in distance cord guarantees error-free patient path metrics.
