Deploying Standardized Patti Pics® Optotypes to Screen Pediatric Eyes Across Australia & New Zealand
Clinical Collaboration: Transforming home-screening mechanics with calibrated optotypes
Overcoming the Fear of Optometric Testing
For many parents, scheduling routine optometric visits for their children is frequently overlooked, yet data indicates that **1 in 6 children possess undetected vision complications**. A core driver of this lapse is that children—and their guardians—often find traditional clinical lanes and diagnostic testing environments intimidating. This psychological friction disengages them from the screening process, preventing proactive intervention.
To pivot consumer behavior, international retail leader OPSM (a Luxottica Group entity) partnered with Precision Vision to implement a playful, non-threatening home-screening paradigm. By blending our university-vetted, blur-calibrated Patti Pics® symbols into an interactive storybook, families can flag potential refractive or structural errors before a child falls behind in their curriculum.
Read Full Partnership HistoryThe Psychophysical Debate on Using Jaeger (J) Notations
When Eduard von Jaeger published his collection of near-reading print samples in Vienna in 1856, he simply labeled his rows with the standard inventory catalogue numbers of the Vienna State Printing House. He never intended to construct a standardized mathematical visual acuity system. Today, noted low vision researcher Dr. August Colenbrander outlines the case against the ongoing usage of Jaeger notations in modern clinics:
A random sampling of 20 modern reading cards showed that the designation for standard 1M newsprint print varied wildly from J2 all the way to J8. This means that in adjacent examination lanes in the very same practice, two separate 'Jaeger cards' can feature entirely different physical letter sizes. Logging a statement like 'Patient can resolve J3' carries no more scientific specificity than writing 'Patient can read headline font' without detailing the font size or viewing distance. Jaeger metrics are utterly unfit to serve as standardized ophthalmic data.”
In direct contrast, Hermann Snellen built his optotypes on a verifiable physical reference standard where letter height subtends 5 minutes of arc at a specific metric target distance. Precision Vision prioritizes Snellen M-units, point sizes, and logMAR progressions to ensure uncompromised clinical accuracy across checking rooms.
PV Awarded Federal Supply Schedule Contract with the VA
Precision Vision has successfully finalized its rigorous compliance review and has been officially awarded an equipment supply schedule contract with the Department of Veterans Affairs. This allows federal and military medical centers to seamlessly procure our calibrated vision testing instrumentation.
